Looking for a fun way to spend a day as a family over the holiday weekend? Check out these exhibits downtown to inspire creativity and wonder in visitors of all ages.
Visit the U.S. Botanic Garden Train Exhibit on display through Jan. 2. Watch the trains go by and admire towns, bridges, and buildings built entirely of plant materials. The exhibit closes this weekend so go early to miss the crowds.
Visit the National Building Museum to see your favorite sky scrapers constructed entirely from Legos. Read more about Lego ® Archicture: Towering Ambition on view through Sept. 12, 2012. If Lego-building at home is more your speed, you still have time to see this one through next summer. Be sure to plan to spend some time in the building room where you can try out Lego-building and practice city planning with other visitor/builders.

Visit the National Museum of Natural History to see The Bright Beneath. This unique art exhibit was inspired by bioluminescent sea creatures and is featured in the Sant Ocean Hall of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. This is a great exhibit to see connections between art, science, engineering and design. Visitors can discuss the interesting use of materials, as well as the unique interactive nature of the mechanical creatures. The exhibit is on view through Jan. 8.
