Electrical Issue Causes Two-Alarm Fire at Springfield Station

An electrical issue in one of the fire trucks caused the Sunday fire at a Springfield station.

(Updated 4:59 p.m. Monday) SPRINGFIELD, VA -- Fire investigators determined an electrical issue in a backup fire truck caused the two-alarm fire early Sunday, May 14 at a fire station in Springfield.

Around 12:45 a.m. Sunday, firefighters at Fire Station 26 near Edsall Road were alerted to the fire by the alarm sounding. A second alarm prompted assistance from the Arlington County Fire Department. All firefighters escaped without injury.

The Associated Press reported that the fire spread to the attic and damaged the roof. It took 60 firefighters to extinguish the fire after about 40 minutes.

WTOP reported that the fire caused $200,000 in damages, and the fire truck was a total loss.

According to officials, the station is currently uninhabitable but should be ready for firefighters to return to 24-hour shifts within the next week.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said in a statement, "We want to assure residents that there will not be any impact to the efficiency or quality of services provided by the department. The Fire and Rescue Department has created an action plan to ensure there are no delays or interruptions to the fire and emergency medical services provided to the residents of Fairfax County as we repair our fire station."
