The two-time TONY Award-winning hit musical American Idiot, based on Green Day’s GRAMMY Award-winning multi-platinum album, boldly takes the American musical where it’s never gone before. This high-octane show includes wildly popular songs from Green Day’s album American Idiot and their follow-up release, 21st Century Breakdown.

Johnny, Tunny and Will struggle to find meaning in a post-9/11 world. The three friends decide to flee the constraints of their hometown for the thrills of city life, but plans are quickly estranged when Will realizes he must stay behind to attend to familial responsibilities, Tunny enters the armed forces, and Johnny’s attention becomes divided by a seductive love interest and a hazardous new friendship. An energy-fueled rock opera, American Idiot, features little dialogue and instead relies on the lyrics from Green Day’s groundbreaking album to execute the story line.

“American Idiot’s voice is that of a lost generation and a lost culture. It’s a voice of pain, and a voice of love, and a voice for the things no one else will speak to. It’s a voice that speaks in order to be spoken to. This is not a show of hate. It is a show of loss, of conclusion, of trying to find what isn’t there. But it is above all else a show of hope, and we, as a community, are lucky beyond belief to have it.” –Julian Worth (Johnny)

“To me, American Idiot is more educational than anything. When I was growing up in post 9/11 America, I had no idea what the phrase meant. The world was just the world. However, doing this show has taught me more that I could ever learn in any history class. Getting to experience the rage, pain, and distrust of our own nation onstage is truly something I’ll never forget. At the same time, American Idiot also radiates love, hope, acceptance, and peace. When Clark first mentioned some of the aspects of the show that incorporated the community I didn’t see how it could possibly get any better. But as the days go on, he finds more and more ways to help those to find peace through this show both during and after the performance and I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this department. It’s still unreal to me that I get to be a member of this amazing cast and crew, but most importantly I get to be a part of this message that life does get better regardless of of where you are. I would like to thank the community for their continued support as we strive to continue to produce Art That Matters.” –Jordan McCray (Miguela)

ART SILENT AUCTION – On the walls of the theatre, artwork that depicts themes of hope, love and light after the darkness, a theme of the performance itself will be displayed throughout the run of the show. This art has been generously donated by local artists and West Potomac’s AP Art and Graphic Arts students in support of the theatre’s efforts to create ART THAT MATTERS, and will be auctioned off to raise money to benefit the organization TO WRITE LOVE ON HER ARMS, an organization that works to show those finding themselves in desperate situations that “Hope is real. Help is real. Your story matters.” Your purchase of artwork will directly benefit their work.
