Kaine Pulls Ahead of Allen in U.S. Senate Money Race

Locally, campaign finance reports show Mount Vernon support for Allen, Old Town support for Kaine

UPDATE: We have updated the story with reaction from the George Allen campaign.

Former Gov. Tim Kaine (D), took in $1.3 million in the third-quarter run-up to next year's U.S. Senate election, besting his opponent, George Allen (R), a former Senator and also a former governor, who raised more than $900,000 in the same period.

In the six months since Kaine announced his decision to run, 8,500 donors have reached into their pockets to donate money to his campaign. The Kaine campaign has $2.55 million cash on hand, according to a press release from the campaign. The Allen campaign reports $1.8 million cash on hand.

"It's no surprise that Tim Kaine—President Obama's former hand-picked Democratic National Committee Chairman—is being rewarded for his years of loyally advocating for all of the President's failed policies, which led to 32 months of unemployment above 8 percent, while running up our national debt," said Bill Riggs, spokesman for the Allen campaign. "Unfortunately for Chairman Kaine, Virginia families aren't looking for their next U.S. Senator to be a rubber stamp for the President's failed agenda."

This fall, Kaine and Allen have each criss-crossed the state to support their party state and local candidates who will be on the ballot come Nov. 8.

"As Governor Kaine takes his positive message on job creation, fiscal responsibility and economic growth through investments in our infrastructure and our workforce across the Commonwealth, Virginians are responding and showing their support," Kaine press secretary Brandi Hoffine said in a statement.

"We are thrilled that so many people have joined our campaign and look forward to building on that grassroots momentum to elect great leaders in 2011 and send Tim Kaine to the U.S. Senate in 2012."

Kaine and Allen each made their third-quarter hauls public before the records are made available by the Federal Election Commission later this month.

How does their financial support stack up locally? Allen sees his biggest support from McLean and Kaine sees his largest financial support coming from Old Town Alexandria.
