Fairfax County Residents React to Osama bin Laden's Death

Glad, but wondering: What's next?

Local reaction today to the death of terrorist Osama bin Laden was mixed: Glad the United States pulled it off, but wary about what could be waiting around the corner.

  • "I found out this morning when I came in," said Jason Skinner, who manages a Starbucks on Richmond Highway. "I was shocked at first.Ā  I was glad that we got the guy but concurrent to that, al Qaida is really going to come after us now." Skinner said he also recalls nearly 10 years ago on Sept. 11th, getting word from a professor about the attacks when he was a student at Bowling Green University in Ohio. "Our professor came in and told us class was dismissed, to go home."
  • Bob Hisel, a retired Air Force officer said he found out about Osama bin Laden's death while watching TV. "I'm very pleased," he said in an interview while running errands. "There may be some knee-jerk reaction by al Qaida but I think they're probably stunned at our ability to eliminate their leader."
  • Jackie Ahyi, a massage therapist in Alexandria, said she was surprised to hear the news. "My question is, is it true? If so, I think it's going to help us. We just need one thing: peace and love. When we talk about war, it's so negative. When is it going to end?"
  • Mom Christina Ramsey of Alexandria, who said she just heard the news today on the radio, said: "I wanted to call a friend who is in the Marines. He just re-enlisted. I'm proud to be an American today. I'm stoked."
  • Leonard Fleming of Beacon Hill said he heard the news yesterday on Facebook. "I was just thinking it's finally over. But I think something's coming. When you bring down somebody like that, something worse is going to take it's place."
