Metro Safetrack Beginning April 15 to Impact Alexandria

Crowding on Blue Line Trains and no Rush Plus Yellow Line trains during Safetrack will impact Alexandria residents.

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Starting Saturday, April 15, D.C. Metro's Safetrack work is happening in Prince George's County, Md. but it will affect Alexandria commuters.

During the Safetrack surge running until May 14, Yellow Rush Plus service will not run. As a result, Blue Line trains are expected to be more crowded during peak periods.

The city of Alexandria recommends residents seek alternate modes of transportation.

Alternatives to Metrorail in Alexandria include:

  • Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express: Both train systems run from Alexandria Union Station (110 Callahan Drive), which is adjacent to the King Street-Old Town Metro Station. VRE also provides service from Franconia-Springfield to Alexandria Union Station, Arlington's Crystal City Station, and D.C.'s L’Enfant Plaza and Union Station.
  • DASH Bus: The bus system runs routes around Alexandria and to the Pentagon. Connections to Metrorail, Metrobus, and other regional buses are available.
  • Bike to Work: Capital Bikeshare has stations around the city Alexandria.
  • Carpool and Carshare: Visit the City of Alexandria's website for carpool options or sign up for carshare.

City departments have developed telecommuting and alternative work schedules to mitigate SafeTrack's impact on commutes. The city has encouraged private employers to do the same.
