Nelly Custis Chapter of DAR honors Virginia regent

Daughters of the American Revolution chapter plants pink dogwood tree, a symbol of state regent's tenure

The Nelly Custis Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution planted a pink dogwood tree at Woodlawn Plantation on Oct. 4 in honor of Virginia State Regent Mrs. Virginia Sebastian Storage. Mrs. Storage has chosen the pink dogwood to symbolize her term as the state’s 38th regent overseeing 132 chapters in seven districts across Virginia.

Woodlawn Plantation off Route 1 in Alexandria was the home of George Washington’s adopted granddaughter Nelly Custis, who married Washington’s nephew Lawrence Lewis. Washington gifted the couple the land for Woodlawn from his extensive holdings.

Nelly Custis Regent Mrs. Natalie Ardoline, who organized the tree-planting, was joined by other members of the active chapter. Nelly Custis members also volunteer to help schools, veterans and food banks in Virginia and across the nation.
