MOUNT VERNON, VA — There's something new to be thankful for at George Washington's estate. A calf was born at Mount Vernon on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28.

Milking Devon cow Clover went into labor and gave birth to a bull calf on the holiday. According to the Mount Vernon estate, the mother and calf are in good condition. The new calf and mother should be visible in the coming weeks on the east lawn of Mount Vernon. The name being considered for the calf is Spud.

Mount Vernon has a livestock team that cares for more than 100 animals representative of the breeds Washington kept in the 18th century. The estate has raised oxen, horses, sheep, hogs, and other animals for over 25 years. According to Mount Vernon research, Washington had 300 to 350 cattle of all kinds after the American Revolution.
