Newspapers, Local Organizations Support Bond Referendum

In the past few weeks, a number of local media outlets and organizations — including Fairfax Times, Huntington Club and League of Women Voters of Fairfax — have written support letters to encourage voters to vote yes for the $30 million bond referendum that will fund a levee to prevent flooding in the Huntington area in future extreme weather conditions.

In their letter of support, Julia Jones and Helen Kelly — co-presidents of LWV of Fairfax, stated that the bond referendum will support soil and water conservation and flood­‐prevention efforts.

"As we experience more frequent violent storms and unpredictable weather, these bonds protect the health, safety and property of County residents," they said. "They will also prevent the economic loss flooding inflicts on our communities."

In the letter, LWV of Fairfax said its supporting other bond referenda on the current ballot, including the Parks and Parks Facilities Bond, Public Safety Bonds and Public Library Bonds.

President of Huntington Club Ross Irwin recently put out a letter to resident and non-resident owners of the organization to encourage them to vote in favor of the bond on Nov. 6.

"...the Huntington Club Board of Directors unanimously passed a resolution of support for Huntington's stormwater drainage improvements," Irwin said in the letter.

Over the past few months, the Huntington Community Association has been a huge catalyst to the bond referendum being approved for this election year and they continue to encourage the support of other Fairfax County residents.

HCA President Harry Shepler and Alan Ruof, floodwall coordinator, have organized supporters to hand out fliers informing people about the bonds for the past few weeks and will also be at polling stations Tuesday to encourage voters to support the bond referendum.

Other supporters of the stormwater drainage improvements bond include the McLean Sun Gazette and Connection Newspapers.
