Planters Peanuts Eco-Friendly 'Nutmobile' Visits Route 1 Saturday

Stop by and score free T-shirts, samples at the Wal-Mart parking lot.

UPDATE (1:45 p.m.): We hear the Nutmobile has moved on to its next location. Good-bye Mr. Peanut!

Planters Peanuts' mascot, Mr. Peanut, has been touring the country in the company's new eco-friendly "Nutmobile," a vehicle shaped like a giant peanut, and today he's stopped by the Wal-Mart, 7910 Richmond Highway, aka Route 1. Fans can stop by and score free samples and T-shirts while they last.

The "green" car is on what the company calls a "sustainability journey" through the country, encouraging local communities to conserve. The tour also encourages residents to become planters through The Corps Network, a service and conservation corps.

The Nutmobile is fueled by peanut oil. Just kidding. No, it's fueled with biodiesel and powered with solar energy, the company said in a news release.

Its stop in the D.C. area is just one of 16 across the country.

Some of the sustainable features on the Planters Nutmobile include:

  • Runs on biodiesel
  • Solar panels on the roof, along with a wind turbine, charge a battery that will power vehicle lights and audio when the Nutmobile is stopped, as well as provide energy for some tour stop needs
  • A two-hour drive in the Nutmobile will generate and store enough wind energy to power a one-hour tour stop event
  • This is the first time a wind turbine has been used to power a commercial vehicle of this nature
  • Reclaimed wood (from an 1840s barn that was being torn down) was used to create the interior flooring
  • Interior lighting is provided by low-energy LED lights
  • Reclaimed headlights, windows and a windshield frame
