Richmond Highway Widening Plans Backed By Fairfax County Board
VDOT will work on a final design of the Richmond Highway project, which includes widening from four to six lanes.

MOUNT VERNON, VA — The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to endorse design plans for the Richmond Highway widening and other improvements.
The $372 million project includes widening over three miles of Richmond Highway (Route 1) from four to six lanes—three lanes in each direction. The widening will happen between Sherwood Hall Lane and Jeff Todd Way. Other improvements include two-way bike lanes, pedestrian sidewalks on both sides, two pedestrian underpasses and space for the county's future Bus Rapid Transit lanes in the middle.
With the board's endorsement, the Virginia Department of Transportation can work on the final design. According to the project page, right-of-way acquisition will begin in winter 2019-2020. Utility relocation is expected to begin in winter 2020-2021, while construction could run from 2023 to 2026, WTOP reported.
