Traffic Alert: Route 1 Lane Shifts Begin Monday
Motorists should use caution when traveling in this area, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

Commuters heading south on Richmond Highway (Route 1) will need to use caution as construction shifts lanes beginning Monday near Fort Belvoir, according to Virginia Department of Transportation.
All lanes south will be shifted to accommodate temporary traffic barriers separating the construction zone from traffic, according to a VDOT release.
This lane shift will occur on a 1/4-mile stretch of Route 1 between the Fairfax County Parkway (Route 286) and Backlick Road near the Tulley Gate entrance of Fort Belvoir.

Also, there will be occasional lane closures on Route 1 in this area outside of peak travel periods until May 2016 for the installation of large culverts for the Mason Run Stream.
The lane shifts are part of the Route 1 Widening Project, which will add an additional lane in both directions and a 32-foot wide median for a more than 3-mile stretch of Route 1 between Telegraph Road and Mount Vernon Memorial Highway.
