Eating Fresh, Eating Local

It's Farmers' Market season, yay!

I just read here in the Kingstowne-Rose Hill, VA Patch that we have a new local Farmer's Market in town! It's a Saturday morning market at the American Legion.

I'm stoked to check it out, because I'm a bit of a Farmer's Market junkie.  I love the Kingstowne Farmer's Market on Friday nights (although I didn't go out in the storms last night).

Being at the market makes my heart happy. I love to know the food I'm buying for myself and my husband is fresh, and that it hasn't been on truck for a week, driving to my big box grocery store all the way from California.  I love the idea of supporting local farmers.  I truly believe our economy needs us to buy food and other goods (that we can) locally, to grow.

And honestly, the food is better. You are not going to find strawberries in the grocery store that even compare to the fresh ones at the market. The fresh berries are red to the core and delicious to the core, too.

Just google farmers' markets in your area, and you'll see Fairfax County has a list of where and when they are.  And, if you can't work out a trip to one of the markets with your busy schedule (we're all super busy in this area with the commute and all!), there's a lovely produce stand that's open every day not to far from Kingstowne/Rose Hill - down on Route 1, near Fort Belviour.  It's called Rorer's Produce, and it's locally owned and they have been in business for more than 30 years.  Check that out.
