Commuters: I-95 Delays Expected During Weekend Repairs

ALEXANDRIA, VA -- Northern Virginia commuters and travelers heading southbound on Interstate 95 are expected to face delays due to bridge repairs during upcoming weekends.

The Virginia Department of Transportation will be repairing the bridge at Neabsco Creek, mile marker 156 just south of Potomac Mills Mall in Woodbridge. VDOT said Monday that one of three lanes will be closed from 9 p.m. Saturday, April 29 to 6 a.m. Monday, May 1 and 10 p.m. Friday, May 5 to 6 a.m. Monday, May 8. The southbound rest stop will be closed.

For commuters around the Beltway in Northern Virginia, VDOT suggests the following alternative route: Take I-495 to I-66 westbound to Route 29/15 to Route 17 southbound to I-95 southbound. Drivers should add time to Monday commutes, since repairs end at 6 a.m.

For commuters utilizing 95, all Express Lanes will be southbound to alleviate traffic. Drivers can access these by paying tolls or traveling with at least three people in the car with an E-ZPass Flex set to HOV mode. The Express Lanes will be southbound starting Friday at 1 p.m. and throughout the weekend. Northbound travelers will see heavier traffic with the Express Lanes changes.

WTOP reported that if rainy weather delays repairs either weekend, it could be pushed back one or two weeks. VDOT hopes to complete the project before Memorial Day weekend brings heavier traffic.

Brian Morrison, VDOT senior structural bridge engineer, told WTOP a hole opened up in the bridge deck late in 2016, signaling a need for temporary repairs. He anticipates the bridge deck will need a full reconstruction within 10 years. About 71,000 vehicles cross the bridge each day.
