Dog Dies, Four Displaced In Huge Springfield Fire

Fire investigators are working to pinpoint the cause of the massive Dec. 21 fire at a Springfield home.

SPRINGFIELD, VA—Four residents are displaced and their dog died in the Dec. 21 fire in Springfield.

Firefighters from Fairfax County, Springfield, West Springfield, Annandale and other stations responded to the massive blaze in the 7400 block of Nancemond Street at 9 p.m. the Thursday prior to Christmas. Crews battled a fire that spread from the two-story single family home to multiple sides and the ground around the property.

Two residents were home at the time and escaped before the smoke alarms sounded. No firefighters or residents were injured, but the dog was unable to escape.

Fire investigators say the blaze started in an enclosed porch but have not determined the cause. Initial estimates of damages are $293,975. The four displaced residents have accepted Red Cross assistance.
