Fairfax Board Congratulates Edison on 50 Years

Thomas Edison High School celebrates its 50^th anniversary this year, a feat the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors honored during its meeting last week.

Jeff McKay said he looked forward to the days ahead for Edison, which was founded in 1962 and just recently saw the completion of nearly $50 million in renovations.

“It is a great turning point at Edison, as we just finished a multi-million dollar renovation program,” McKay said. “If you go up to the school and look at it today, it’s amazing the improvements that they’ve made.”

The construction added 48,000 square feet to the property, giving it a total of 351,000 square feet that holds 1,875 students. Funds for the project, which totaled to just over $48 million, were acquired through the Fairfax County 2005 school bond referendum

McKay noted that the renovations might have disrupted everyday life at the school, but thanked the school’s community for its ongoing support and patience with a project that will only help the school’s future.

“The administrators, the faculty and the students at Edison did an amazing job,” McKay said.

Pamela Brumfield, the school’s new principal, was present to receive the honor on behalf of the school and thanked the Board.

“We look at every child with potential and the belief that they can do more and achieve more,” she said. “It doesn’t matter their background or ethnicity. We believe in every child who enters that door.”

Former principal Greg Croghan retired on Aug. 1 after nine years with Edison.
