Woman With Knife Shot By Officer At Home In Springfield: Police
A Fairfax County police officer shot a woman holding a knife at a home in Springfield early Monday evening, according to the police.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A Fairfax County police officer shot a woman early Monday evening at a home in Springfield where the police had been called due to a disturbance, according to the police department.
The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was in critical condition, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said at a news briefing Monday evening. On Tuesday, the department said the woman was in stable condition after surgery. The shooting occurred in the 8000 block of Gosport Lane in Springfield.
Davis said police officers were called to the group home shortly before 5:30 p.m. The woman, who the police chief said is about 30 years old, was threatening to harm herself and others in the home.

When police officers entered the home, the woman "advanced upon" the officers with a large knife, and an officer shot the woman in the abdomen.

Both police officers who arrived at the home had their body cameras turned on, Davis said. "The body camera footage will obviously be a key part of this investigation," he said.
Davis said he has reviewed the bodycam footage, which showed the police officers entering the home through a backdoor. The home had four occupants, including the woman who was shot.
The woman told the police officers, "I'm not going to stop" and "I'm going to stab you," according to Davis. The officer who shot the woman is a veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department, he said.
Prior to Monday evening's incident, Davis said the police department had been called to the same group home "on more than one occasion."
The person who called 911 — a caregiver in the home — described the situation to the dispatcher as "life-threatening," according to Davis.
