Firefighter Injured In Springfield Area Furniture Store Fire

The combustion of saw dust caused a fire at a furniture store, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — One firefighter was injured during the response to a furniture fire in the Springfield area Tuesday, according to Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

Around 9:03 a.m., Fairfax County and Alexandria fire units responded to a two-story commercial building in the 5500 block of General Washington Drive. Crews found smoke evident in the in showroom of a furniture store and located remnants of a fire in the warehouse. The fire sprinkler system had put out the fire before fire department arrival. One firefighter had a minor injury, and there were no civilian injuries reported.

No one was at the furniture store when the fire occurred. The chief building engineer discovered the fire while working in a second-floor suite. Upon smelling an electrical odor, he found smoke coming through the furniture store windows and called 911. The building fire alarm system activated, alerting occupants of other businesses.

Fire investigators determined the cause of the fire was the combustion of accumulated saw dust from a milling machine in the warehouse. Damages were estimated to be $327,000.
