Free Income Tax Prep Sites Return To Fairfax County In 2020

Various sites are offering free tax preparation services for individuals and families meeting income requirements.

KINGSTOWNE, VA — The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is back in 2020, offering free preparation of income tax returns for individuals and families meeting income requirements.

Individuals and families who earned $56,000 or less in 2019 can utilize this free service. Volunteers trained and certified by the IRS are on hand to help you get your maximum tax refund and determine if you are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). The service covers federal and state tax returns.

There are 15 sites in Northern Virginia, including nine in Fairfax County and one in the City of Falls Church. Sites are open through April, but dates will vary by location.

Individuals or families must bring the following documents for the free tax preparation service:

  • Photo ID (for you and your spouse if filing jointly)
  • Social Security cards or Tax Payer Identification Number (ITIN) for everyone in the family
  • All income statements (W-2, W-P, W-2G & 1099, etc)
  • All income statements for a dependent with employment (W-2, etc)
  • Voided check for direct deposit
  • Expense documents: dependent care, education-related expenses, home mortgage interest payments
  • Proof of health insurance coverage (form 1095A, insurance card, Medicare or Medicaid card)
