Historic Retailer To Close VA Store In 2026

A historic retailer said it is closing additional locations across the country, including a store in a Northern Virginia mall.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — JCPenney is closing more stores across the country, including a store in a Northern Virginia mall.

The JCPenney store at Springfield Town Center will close May 24, the retailer confirmed to The Washington Business Journal, which reported closing sales have begun.

"Regretfully, we are unable to continue our current lease terms for this store location and have been unable to find another suitable location in the market," JCPenney said in an email to the Journal. "We are grateful to our dedicated associates and the loyal customers who have shopped at our Springfield, VA, location through the years, and we hope to continue serving them throughout our nearly 650 stores nationwide and at JCPenney.com."

JCPenney stores in Northern Virginia will remain open at Potomac Mills, Sterling and Fair Oaks Mall in Fairfax, the outlet reported.

Currently headquartered in Plano, Texas, the department store chain once had more than 1,900 locations in the United States. Today, that number is less than 650. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020.

JCPenney closed eight stores in May 2025, calling them ā€œisolatedā€ closures that did not signal a reduction in the venerable department chain’s store count. In July, two Virginia stores were among 119 stores sold to a Boston private equity firm in a nearly $1 billion deal.

Onyx Partners paid $947 million in an all-cash transaction, according to Copper Property CTL Pass Through Trust, which took over 160 JCPenney Stores when the company declared bankruptcy in 2020.

"The Buyer has now completed its due diligence, and its deposit under the Agreement is non-refundable," Copper Property Trust said in a news release.

According to a list released by USA Today, two Virginia locations were sold in the deal, including:

  • Southpark Mall: 6 Southpark Mall, Colonial Heights
  • Peninsula Town Center: 2071 Coliseum Drive, Hampton
