Fairfax County Police are investigating a string of burglaries and thefts from cars in the Kingstowne area in July.

Residents are asked to follow these tips to prevent home burglaries:

  • Keep all doors and windows closed and securely fastened. An open window or door is an open invitation for burglars. Thieves are also quick to spot weak locks that may be easily forced open.
  • Secure sliding glass doors by placing a metal rod or a wooden dowel rod in the track.
  • Always lock the door to an attached garage.
  • Create the illusion that you are home by using timers on lights, radios and TVs. Keep the perimeter of your home well lit.
  • Never leave clues that you are away on a trip. Have a trusted neighbor collect mail and newspapers while you are away so delivered items do not accumulate.

Another recent Franconia Police District investigation involves thefts from cars. Police offer the following tips to prevent these crimes:

  • Lock your doors every time you leave your car. An unlocked door leads to access to the garage door opener which leads to your house.
  • Don’t leave keys in or on your vehicle.
  • Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially in plain sight. Electronics, GPS units, phones, laptops, purses and wallets are huge targets.
  • Report suspicious activity, such as people walking around in the middle of the night and car alarms that continue to go off.
