Dog Dies In Rose Hill Area House Fire

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue said improperly discarded smoking materials started the fire on a porch.

ROSE HILL, VA—A dog died and two people were injured in a house fire in the Rose Hill area Sunday, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

The fire was reported in the 5900 block of Montell Drive around 1:58 p.m. Units found fire engulfing the rear of the home and spread to the second floor, attic and garage.

All residents were accounted for, but firefighters located a dog that died in the home. A resident and firefighter were taken to the hospital for evaluations. City of Alexandria firefighters assisted with the response.

The home's residents weren't home at the time. A neighbor smelled smoke and found fire in the back of the house. It is unclear if smoke alarms were working.

Fire investigators say improperly smoking materials caused the fire on a screened porch. Damages were estimated to be $663,538.

Four residents were displaced but have declined Red Cross assistance.
