North Springfield Fire Displaces Family, Fundraiser Started
Residents escaped without injuries after a smoke alarm alerted them to a fire early Sunday.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — Five people were displaced following a fire in North Springfield Sunday, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.
Fire units responded to a single-family home in the 5400 block of Kempsville Street around 2:09 a.m. Sunday. Five people were home at the time of the fire. The homeowner was awakened by the smoke alarm and located the fire in the utility room. The homeowner notified 911 and evacuated the home.
Arriving fire units found fire showing from the attic and worked to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries.

According to fire investigators, the cause of the fire was a malfunction within the HVAC unit that ignited nearby combustibles. Damages were estimated to be $193,750.
The five displaced residents declined Red Cross assistance. A fundraiser has been started on GoFundMe to support the Corcoran family. The fundraising will help the family navigate temporary housing, insurance and rebuilding.

"The Corcoran family is well known in the North Springfield neighborhood and beyond for being generous and helpful and kind," the fundraiser states. "We want to help them raise money to help ease their burden a little as they navigate the challenging months/year ahead."
As of Monday evening, the fundraiser has raised over $20,000 for the family.
