Outlet Sparks Fire In Home Near Kingstowne

An electrical outlet is to blame for a fire in a Kingstowne area home.

ROSE HILL, VA—An overloaded outlet sparked a fire in a Rose Hill home Monday night.

Around 11:50 p.m., Fairfax County and Alexandria firefighters responded to the fire in the 4100 block of Ivanhoe Lane. The fire was traced to the garage, where firefighters quickly put it out.

Officials say a resident had helped contain the fire before firefighters arrived. The resident discovered the fire after hearing the garage door open. He used a fire extinguisher to put out part of the fire, and another resident assisted with a garden hose. Five residents were home at the time, but o one was injured.

Fire investigators say the blaze started in a garage outlet and was accidental. Damages are about $12,000. The residents did not accept Red Cross assistance.

Smoke alarms were not working, but firefighters installed working alarms before leaving the scene.
