Person Dead In Springfield Hotel Stabbing, 1 Charged

Police found one person dead and another injured at the hotel early Saturday morning.

SPRINGFIELD, VA — A person is dead after a stabbing in the Hilton Springfield hotel early Saturday, Fairfax County Police say.

Around 3 a.m., police responded to a call at the hotel, located at 6550 Loisdale Road. Officers found a person dead and a man with upper body injuries.

The victim was identified as Toni Newkirk, 55, of Louisiana.

The man, Matthew Cook, 34, of Louisiana, has been charged with second degree murder. He was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. Cook is under guard by officers as he receives treatment. Upon his release, he will be taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and held with no bond.

Police continue to investigate what led to the stabbing. Newkirk and the man knew each other, and there is no threat to the public.
