Richmond Second To Fairfax In New Coronavirus Cases
The capital city reported more new cases than the more populous Prince William County and Virginia Beach.
VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,121 new coronavirus cases on Thursday, bringing the cumulative total to 116,579 cases. There have been 12 new deaths since Wednesday, meaning 2,527 Virginians who had COVID-19 have died. A total of 9,391 hospitalizations have been reported to date.
Richmond, a city of over 230,000 people, recorded more new cases than Prince William County, which has over 470,000 people. Localities leading in new cases on Thursday were Fairfax County with 81, Richmond City with 73, Prince William County with 66, and Virginia Beach with 55.
The latest 7-day positivity rate for coronavirus tests in Virginia stands at 6.5 percent as of Aug. 23. The number of PCR tests completed in Virginia is 1,521,180, up 18,659 from Wednesday.

Outbreaks, defined as two or more laboratory-confirmed cases in a setting, account for 17,112 cases in Virginia, or about 14.6 percent. The facility type with the most cases and deaths is long-term care facilities. These facilities have reported 9,195 cases and 1,340 deaths tied to outbreaks. Long-term care facility deaths account for about 53 percent of coronavirus deaths in Virginia. More data on outbreaks at specific facilities is available on the VDH Long-Term Care Task Force website.
There have been eight multinflammatory syndrome cases in children and no fatalities in Virginia. The condition, which is believed to be in children who have COVID-19 or have been around someone with COVID-19, involves the inflammation of different body parts.

VDH did not have updated statistics in its key measures database on Thursday. This database provides 7-day averages of cases, deaths and percent positive rates, as well as current hospitalizations, hospitals experiencing difficulty obtaining PPE and breakdowns among Virginia's five regions.

- Alexandria: 3,333 cases, 297 hospitalizations, 61 deaths; increase of nine cases and one hospitalization
- Arlington County: 3,457 cases, 454 hospitalizations, 138 deaths; increase of 22 cases and two hospitalizations
- Fairfax County: 17,959 cases, 2,030 hospitalizations, 549 deaths; increase of 81 cases and 13 hospitalizations
- Fairfax City: 109 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
- Falls Church: 66 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
- Loudoun County: 5,825 cases, 373 hospitalizations, 117 deaths; increase of 38 cases and three hospitalizations
- Manassas: 1,778 cases, 126 hospitalizations, 23 deaths; increase of six cases
- Manassas Park: 555 cases, 52 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
- Prince William County: 10,577 cases, 846 hospitalizations, 183 deaths; increase of 66 cases and three hospitalizations
- Fredericksburg: 470 cases, 47 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of 14 cases
- Spotsylvania County: 1,759 cases, 112 hospitalizations, 38 deaths; increase of 24 cases, two hospitalizations and one death
- Stafford County: 1,639 cases, 135 hospitalizations, 10 deaths; increase of 14 cases
