Surovell, Krupicka and Lopez Oppose AccessUVA Cuts

Earlier this month, Del. Scott Surovell (D-44th), Del. Alfonso Lopez (D-46th) and Rob Krupicka (D-45th) wrote a letter to Rector Martin of the University Board of Visitors at the University of Virginia to object to cuts to AccessUVa.

In August, the board voted to end AccessUVa's all-grant financial aid for students, according to The Cavalier Daily. The board voted to replace portions of all-grant financial aid with subsidized loans.

In the letter, the three Virginia delegates advised the board to reconsider its decision and consider including loans in every financial aid package, The Cavalier Daily reported.

“Such a debt load will almost certainly deter some deserving students from attending U.Va. or making it to graduation day; for others it will limit the options available to them upon graduation,” reads the delegates' letter to the board.

Surovell, Krupicka and Lopez said in the letter that the AccessUVa program allowed students who may not have had the opportunity prior to the program to receive an education at a high level institution.
