VA 2018 Primary Election Live Results: Comstock, Stewart Win
Barbara Comstock will face Jennifer Wexton in the 10th congressional district, and Corey Stewart will challenge Tim Kaine for Senate.

Rep. Barbara Comstock will face Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Wexton in the 10th congressional district election and Corey Stewart against Sen. Tim Kaine this fall, one of several heated primaries in Virginia as Democrats nationwide push to take back the House and Senate. And in an election cycle during which some Republican candidates are distancing themselves from President Donald Trump, Stewart is unabashed in his support for the president.
Comstock won against challenger Shak Hill, an Air Force veteran, but the general election will present a bigger challenge. Virginia's 10th congressional district race is one of the midterm elections to watch this year, say political pundits. The district, which encompasses Clarke, Frederick, and Loudoun Counties, parts of Fairfax, and Prince William Counties and the cities of Manassas, Manassas Park and Winchester, is considered a swing district.
In a message to supporters, Wexton said, “For the next five months, my team and I will work tirelessly to reach out to all the people of the 10th Congressional District. We’ll show them what a real Representative will do for them -- meet with them, listen to them, and represent their interests in Congress, not those of the NRA, big corporations and fat cat political donors. I look forward to earning their votes and helping to take our Democracy back.”

Sen. Tim Kaine, the 2016 vice presidential candidate and former governor of Virginia, ran unopposed in the primary and secured the Democratic nomination. Kaine is running for a second term. He won the seat in 2012 after defeating former Republican governor George Allen by 6 percentage points.

Come November, Kaine will face Corey Stewart, the Prince Williams Board of Supervisors chairman and President Trump supporter who built his failed 2017 gubernatorial campaign on defending Confederate monuments. Real Clear Politics polls from June 5 say Kaine has an 11 point lead when matched against Stewart. Republicans are at a fundraising disadvantage against Kaine, who The Washington Post reports could raise $25 million during the election.
Stewart's campaign website describes his record this way: "Stewart has won five times to lead a blue county in Northern Virginia while leading as a conservative, cracking down on illegal immigration, defending the Second Amendment, and bringing in jobs that led to Prince William being ranked #1 for jobs in Virginia. ... A vote for Stewart on June 12th is a vote for Trump's America First Agenda!"
"A cruder imitation of Donald Trump who stokes white supremacy and brags about being 'ruthless and vicious,' Corey Stewart would be an embarrassment for Virginia in the U.S. Senate, where he would eliminate health care for millions of Americans and slash public education funding," said the Kaine campaign in response to Stewart's win. "In sharp contrast, Tim Kaine is fighting to make Virginia and our country work for all, where good jobs, health care and education are available to everyone and all people are treated with dignity and respect."

A number of other primaries were held for candidates challenged in their own party. Democrat Jennifer Lewis will compete against Republican Ben Cline for retiring Rep. Bob Goodlatte's seat in the sixth congressional district.
Other races involve incumbents hoping to hold off challengers. Democrat Vangie Williams secured the first congressional district nomination and will run against incumbent Republican Rob Wittman. In the second congressional district, incumbent Rep. Scott Taylor won the Republican nomination and will face Democratic challenger Elaine Luria. Incumbent Democrat Donald McEachin faces a general election challenge from Republican Ryan McAdams in the fourth congressional district, Republican David Brat versus Democrat Abigail Spanberger in the seventh district and Republican incumbent Morgan Griffith versus Democrat Anthony Flaccavento in the ninth congressional district.
