Virginia's Northwest Region Leads In New Coronavirus Cases

New cases statewide have been below 1,000 for the last two days, bringing the 7-day average down.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 836 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, marking the second straight day with new cases below 1,000. The 7-day average of new cases is 970. In all, 128,407 cases have been reported across Virginia, along with 2,686 deaths and 9,932 hospitalizations.

The northwest region, which has often been last among Virginia's five regions in new cases, led the state on Tuesday. New cases include 240 in the northwest region, 202 in the northern region, 173 in the central region, 122 in the eastern region, 99 in the southwest region. It wasn't the highest daily case total for the northwest, however — the highest was 253 cases on June 7.

As for Northern Virginia, the case average has remained in the 200 range for much of August and upper 100s from mid-June to through much of July.

There have been 1,684,048 PCR tests total tests completed so far in Virginia. The 7-day average of positive PCR tests is 7.5 percent as of Sept. 4. The eastern region's average has seen improvements since increasing in July; it's now down to 7.5 percent like the statewide average. The central region's average also matches the statewide average of 7.5 percent, and the northwest region's average is 7.7 percent. The 6.2 percent average in the northern region is below the statewide average while the southwest region's average is 10.1 percent.

Current hospitalizations of COVID-19 patients fell by 10 from Monday to Tuesday, bringing the total to 1,051. There are 316 patients in the eastern region, 246 in the central region, 238 in the northern region, 151 in the southwest region and 100 in the northwest region.

According to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association, there are 118 COVID-19 patients on ventilators and 240 in the intensive care units. Ventilator use among all Virginia hospital patients is at 19 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 71 percent. That's 4 percent higher than the 2019 average for ICU occupancy in Virginia. One hospital is reporting difficulty obtaining personal protective equipment in the next 72 hours.

  • Alexandria: 3,511 cases, 302 hospitalizations, 62 deaths; increase of 11 cases
  • Arlington County: 3,640 cases, 476 hospitalizations, 143 deaths; increase of eight cases
  • Fairfax County: 19,055 cases, 2,087 hospitalizations, 562 deaths; increase of 72 cases
  • Fairfax City: 125 cases, 13 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
  • Falls Church: 66 cases, 11 hospitalizations, seven deaths; no changes
  • Loudoun County: 6,223 cases, 395 hospitalizations, 118 deaths; increase of 25 cases and one hospitalization
  • Manassas: 1,837 cases, 128 hospitalizations, 24 deaths; increase of four cases
  • Manassas Park: 582 cases, 53 hospitalizations, seven deaths; increase of two cases
  • Prince William County: 11,253 cases, 872 hospitalizations, 188 deaths; increase of 36 cases
  • Fredericksburg: 496 cases, 48 hospitalizations, four deaths; increase of one case
  • Spotsylvania County: 1,892 cases, 125 hospitalizations, 39 deaths; increase of seven cases
  • Stafford County: 1,779 cases, 144 hospitalizations, 13 deaths; increase of 10 cases
