Fairfax County Recruits Raise Money For Injured DC Firefighter
Fairfax County recruits pitched in to raise money for the DC firefighter critically injured on scene of a house fire.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA—After a DC firefighter was injured on scene of a house fire last week, Fairfax County firefighter recruits decided to pitch in.
DC Fire and EMS Firefighter Dane Smothers Jr., 28, was critically injured after being struck by a ladder truck in Northeast DC and pinned by two trucks last week. He was one of the firefighters responding to the house fire around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2 in the 800 block of F Street NE. His uncle, a D.C. firefighter, was also at the scene.
Smothers underwent surgery for his injuries and remains in critical condition.

Fairfax County Recruit School 142 collectively raised $250. The donations will go toward a GoFundMe page helping the family with medical expenses. As of Wednesday morning, the page has raised over $8,500 of the $10,000 goal.

The firefighter's injuries hit close to home for the recruits. as Smothers had left the academy three prior, according to WTOP.
