• Developer Bobby Freeman details Newport News Port Warwick's evolution in new book (pilotonline.com) — Port Warwick's transformation from a contaminated Eveready Battery site into a lively mixed-use neighborhood in Newport News is chronicled in developer Bobby Freeman's new book, which also highlights ties to native author William Styron. Freeman will sign copies during the Port Warwick Art & Sculpture Festival on Oct. 10, giving residents a chance to meet him and celebrate their community's evolution.
   

• Newport News could pay part of your real estate tax bill. Here's how. (pilotonline.com) — Newport News homeowners can now apply for a new ResidentFirst Housing Relief Grant that credits up to half of their 2027 real estate tax bill, but funds are first-come, first-served. Income limits apply, housing costs must exceed 30% of income, and applications are open through Dec. 31, so eligible residents should apply soon and keep paying taxes while waiting.
   

• De Aquino, Rodriguez Sanchez Capture MEAC Fall Invitational Women's Doubles Title (nccueaglepride.com) — A standout North Carolina Central women's doubles team just earned a berth in the ITA Conference Masters after winning the MEAC Fall Invitational, and they'll be back in action Oct. 23-24 at the CNU Invitational in Newport News. Local fans can catch high-level college tennis when Christopher Newport hosts the tournament later this month.
