📰 News we're reading

1. 16-year-old arrested in connection with homicide on Teardrop Lane in Newport News (pilotonline.com) — A July shooting on Teardrop Lane in Newport News' Denbigh area has led to the arrest of a 16-year-old, now charged with first-degree murder, robbery, and firearm offenses. Police had already arrested an 18-year-old Newport News man in July in connection with the same incident, which left 19-year-old Jason Ernesto Martinez Hernandez dead and another man wounded.

2. A Hampton mother wanted to spend more time with the father of their baby. Instead, he killed them both, prosecutors say. (dailypress.com) — A chilling murder trial unfolding in Newport News is revealing text messages, web searches and cellphone data that prosecutors say tie Carlos Johnson Jr. to the 2017 disappearance of Keir Johnson and their baby, Chloe. Jurors heard how Keir detoured to his 35th Street home in Newport News before vanishing, and how investigators later traced suspicious movements, searches and home repairs they believe point to foul play.

3. Disappearances of 2 more Colonial Parkway victims linked to Alan Wade Wilmer Sr. (wavy.com) — Families in Newport News are getting long-awaited answers as the FBI now links two 1988 Colonial Parkway disappearances near the city to deceased Lancaster County resident Alan Wade Wilmer Sr. Investigators say patterns across several regional killings point to him, and federal prosecutors believe the evidence would have supported charges if he were still alive, offering some closure after nearly four decades of uncertainty.

4. Spanberger signs order tightening rules for Virginia data centers (dailypress.com) — Newport News officials are quietly gearing up for potential data center proposals, hiring consultants and reviewing zoning as the governor tightens statewide rules on the industry. A new executive order ends state NDAs on projects, demands tougher environmental and noise standards, and removes automatic approval for large centers, meaning any future facility on the Peninsula would face closer local scrutiny and public debate.

5. Officials break ground on new I-64 express lanes in Norfolk (dailypress.com) — Newport News residents who dread I-64 backups may see relief from a newly launched express lanes project in Norfolk, the final piece of a 45‑mile regional network. The $389 million effort will convert shoulders into tolled express lanes, upgrade 21 bridges, and is designed to ease cross‑water commutes that now make even dating someone in Newport News feel like a logistical headache.
