Atlantic Shores Poses Week-Long Wellness Challenge

The Virginia Beach senior living community puts residents' minds and bodies to the test as part of Active Aging Week, which runs Oct. 5-11.

In a time of increased isolation for many of us, the importance of an active and engaged mind, body and spirit has never been more important. That’s why, to coincide with Active Aging Week, Atlantic Shores senior living community is offering residents a unique, week-long schedule of wellness opportunities.

“The pandemic has really forced us to embrace new things,” said Jason Herring, the community’s fitness and aquatics director the last seven years. “We thought about things we didn’t think would work in the past, such as quick 15-minute outdoor classes, but they have. We didn’t think we’d get enough interest, but we’ve had people participate who never have before.”

On Monday, Oct. 5, residents will begin to complete daily activities that focus on physical, nutritional, social, and mental wellness. Each day will have a different theme, such as ‘Feed Your Heart’ or ‘Laugh and Love.’ Tasks will be centered around the day’s theme, and include meditation, bike rides throughout the 100-acre campus, making healthy meal choices, or cul de sac fitness classes in the community’s villas.

Residents will be paired together for support and encouragement, with classes and small group activities taking place outdoors where possible.

“COVID really gave residents time to open their minds to just try new things,” said Herring, adding residents who successfully complete the week’s schedule will receive a fitness-themed goodie bag.
