Holiday Light Parade Brightens End to a Challenging Year
The drive-through event at Atlantic Shores Retirement Community is a socially distanced way for families to get into the festive spirit.

In a year that has been largely defined by unprecedented challenges, Atlantic Shores Retirement Community is looking to inject some holiday spirit for Virginia Beach-area families.
The community is hosting their Illumination Celebration, a drive-through holiday light display designed to be a safe, socially distanced event for families. From the comfort of their vehicles, participants can meander through the designated route on campus, which includes more than 35,000 lights (approx. 17,000 feet).

“Everyone smiles, everyone feels good looking at holiday lights,” said Becky King, Atlantic Shores’ marketing coordinator. “This is an opportunity for us to spread a little cheer in 2020 the best way we can.”

Upon arrival, participants are checked in and greeted by live holiday music. They're also provided hot chocolate, apple cider and a cookie service. The mile-long route includes 26 themed displays, such as a live Santa with his sleigh, a gingerbread house, snowmen, reindeer, a patriotic salute, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, a manger scene, and live musicians and performers from a local dance studio.

Guests are asked to RSVP with the community due to limited space and encouraged to bring non-perishable items that will be donated to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore.
