Norfolk Continues Mission Critical Services With An Eye To Future

NORFOLK, VA –Norfolk city leaders are developing a plan to restart some city services that were curtailed or eliminated in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Services will be reactivated using a measured, phased approach based on data and focusing on responding to critical needs while keeping the health and safety of city employees and the public at the forefront.

Today, operations at city parking garages return to normal. Free, one-hour parking at metered spaces for customers grabbing to-go orders or curbside pickup from restaurants and other businesses remains available.

Trash and recycling collection will continue. To protect the health and safety of Public Works employees, bulk items will not be picked up unless the items are a hazard. Yard waste, whether bundled or in clear bags, will not be collected, but residents can place yard waste in the green trash containers if there is room. Residents cannot schedule bulk trash pickups until those collections are restarted.

Information, when available, will be announced on the city’s website, social media platforms and other outlets. Residents who wish to take bulk and yard waste to the SPSA landfill in Suffolk should visit www.spsa.com for operating hours and other information. The SPSA landfill in Norfolk is open to residents on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

Police, Fire and Rescue and 911 operations are fully staffed.

Because callers to Norfolk CARES are facing long wait times, residents are urged to use the MyNorfolk mobile app or website for service requests and questions. Any requests that are not considered emergencies will be handled as soon as staffing levels return to normal. Updates will be posted as they are available.
