🌱 Sheriff McCabe's Mental Competency + Man Killed On Remsen St.

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Norfolk.

Good morning, people of Norfolk! It's me again, Sean Peek, your host of the Norfolk Daily.

First, today's weather:

Showers; colder in the p.m.. High: 51 Low: 28.

Here are the top three stories today in Norfolk:

  1. Since being found guilty of multiple public corruption charges last summer, former Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe's mental health has declined rapidly. Now, McCabe's attorney is requesting a mental competency evaluation before his sentencing. Defense attorney James Broccoletti stated that the former sheriff suffers from early-onset Alzheimer's disease, and has asked the court to order a psychiatric or psychological examination of his client. Notably, competency issues are typically raised before trial, not before sentencing. (Daily Press)
  2. A 24-year-old man was fatally shot on Remsen Street on Tuesday night. Victim Frankie Bland was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and later died from his injuries. Officials determined that the incident happened inside of the Remsen Street house; however, neither a motive nor circumstances surrounding the incident have been released. (WAVY.com)
  3. Car thefts spiked in 2021 across Hampton Roads cities, including Norfolk. The Norfolk Police Department reported a 33% increase in vehicle thefts in the last calendar year, with 158 vehicles taken in December 2021 alone. (The Virginian-Pilot)
