🌱 Youngkin Works To Suspend Gas Tax + How To Spot Sex Trafficking

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Norfolk.

Happy Tuesday, neighbors! Here's everything you need to know to get this day started. Here's everything you need to know around Norfolk today.

First, today's weather:

Warmer; a little p.m. rain. High: 75 Low: 63.

Here are the top three stories today in Norfolk:

  1. To help Virginians save on high gas prices, Governor Glenn Youngkin sent legislation to the General Assembly to suspend the state gas tax for three months. The gas tax is about 26.2 cents per gallon and 27 cents for diesel. "Virginians need tax relief and it's time for the General Assembly to act on the multiple tax relief proposals," said Youngkin. 2. Norfolk State University president, Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, was one of 18 appointees tapped for President Joe Biden's Board of Advisors on Historically Black Colleges and Universities. "I look forward to collaborating with my fellow board members as we work to improve the outcomes for students who attend our historic institutions," said Adams-Gaston in a statement. She has served as Norfolk State's president since 2019. (The Virginian-Pilot)
  3. Human sex trafficking is happening in Hampton Roads and News 3 investigation looked into what is being done to identify and stop it. Right across the river from Norfolk is Hampton-based Freekind, a nonprofit that helps survivors, many of whom didn't realize that they were trafficking victims. The organization focuses on educating and advocating for victims, most of whom experienced domestic violence and sexual abuse, experienced addiction, were runaways, or were involved in the juvenile justice or child welfare system.
