📰 News we're reading

• Pumpkins Weather Tough Growing Season, Are Prime for Picking (morningagclips.com) — In Tazewell, local farmer Andy Neel says this year's pumpkins survived a dry start, heavy storms, and disease to still offer plenty of carving and decorative varieties for area buyers. Despite weather damage and higher fuel costs cutting into profits, he and other Virginia growers report that families should have no trouble finding pumpkins for fall traditions at local markets and patches.

• Virginia wins $7.2 million HHS grant to expand high-quality childcare in Southwest and Southside communities (fundsforngos.org) — Tazewell County is in line for a $2.5 million share of a new federal HHS grant, funding a 10,000-square-foot childcare center expected to create about 25 jobs and serve roughly 148 children. The broader $7.2 million package also supports childcare projects in Danville, Pittsylvania, and Washington counties, aiming to boost workforce participation and disaster recovery across Southwest and Southside Virginia.
