Carter Boehm, Founder of Ponderosa Films, On Movie Trailers
Carter Boehm takes a moment to provide his thoughts on 2018's best film trailers.

The job of a movie trailer is to build anticipation. A good trailer grabs your attention, gets you interested in the story, and most importantly, makes you want to go see the movie that the trailer was made to promote. The best trailers do all of that with a cinematic flare of their own that masterfully reflects what you can expect to see from the film itself. With 2018 coming to a close, we’d like to take a moment to highlight some of the best trailers from this past year.
Mission: Impossible — Fallout
It could legitimately be argued that Mission: Impossible is one of the rare action series that has gotten even better with time. It’s like each installment tries to out-do the previous one with its big action set pieces. Opening with a cool and menacing monologue from anarchist mastermind Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), this trailer from Paramount Pictures demonstrates that “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” continues that trend.
Vice
No matter what side of the fence you stand on politically, chances are that you have some strong memories of the George W. Bush White House years. What you may not recognize is Christian Bale in this portrayal of former Vice President Dick Cheney. This trailer from Annapurna Pictures presents the very first footage of Bale’s astonishing physical transformation. The trailer is framed around a conversation between Cheney and Bush, and it does a great job establishing the cunning of the former VP and setting up the true tale of political intrigue to come.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
This trailer, released by Warner Bros. Pictures for San Diego Comic-Con, utilizes an arrangement of Claude Debussy’s “Clair de Lune” done by Michael Afanasyev. It’s worth mentioning because the haunting beauty of the music perfectly reflects the content of the trailer. These monsters bring fear and the threat of destruction, but there’s also a sense of wonder and magnificence about them. This strange contrast is added onto by the woman whose words act as narration. Godzilla and the other Titans “are the only guarantee that life will carry on” in a world that faces mass extinction. Salvation through destruction? “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” seems to be much heavier than the typical monster movie.
