Scenes From The Ballpark - Worcester Red Sox Vs. Norfolk Tandangs At Harbor Park, Norfolk

This past Saturday, Rachel and I "Rode The Tide" over to Harbor Park to catch the Norfolk Tides vs. Worcester Red Sox. The game is now a yearly tradition for us/me, with the Boston Red Sox AAA affiliate (Woo Sox) facing off against my new hometown crush, the Baltimore Orioles AAA affiliate Tides. The game is a great way for me to connect with the Sox, checking out top prospects as well as players who have MLB experience but no steady position available at the big club level. In this season of utility players playing a ton of innings for the Boston Red Sox, it was not surprising to see several of these players who have gone up and were now back down at AAA on Saturday night.

With no rain in sight and temperatures in the mid to upper 80s, Saturday night was a fantastic weather night for baseball in Norfolk. The Tides, in honor of Filipino American heritage night, played as the Norfolk Tandangs. The Red Sox in their road reds simply had "Worcester" across the chest of their uniforms. The main attraction for me - Worcester Red Sox utility infielder Franklin Arias. Arias is the #7 ranked prospect in all of Major League Baseball, according to MLB.com, and it goes without saying, is one of the top ranked prospects in the entire Boston Red Sox organization. Just 20 years old, his ceiling for greatness is about as high as you can get. And he was in the lineup Saturday night, playing 2nd base, and leading off for the visiting Woo Sox.

From what I can recall from games passed, the Filipino American Heritage night is usually a pretty packed house at Harbor Park. Saturday was no exception, the crowd was filling in as we took our seats in the first inning around the 211 section of the stadium. Two national anthems were sung - the Filipino National Anthem and then the United States of American National Anthem. Add to that, a post game fireworks spectacular on the lineup card. By the time Rachel and I found our seats, Worcester was up 1-0.

Both the Worcester and Boston Red Sox had historic months of July (2026) in terms of winning. The Woo Sox recorded 15 wins. The big club Red Sox, they won just about every game they played en route to a 20 win month. To say that Worcester and Boston are playing good baseball at the right time is probably an understatement. On the other side of the field, the Tides and Orioles have struggled a bit in 2026. The Tides currently sit at 37-69 after dropping the series finale to Worcester on Sunday. The Orioles are struggling at just under .500 for the season at 54-58 in a very, very competitive American League East. In years passed, the Tides have had a really strong team of young talent feeding the Orioles. This year, not so much as far as I have seen in the games I have attended. But then again, I don't follow the Orioles like I do the Sox, so I could be way off on that statement.

It was good to see players like Kristian Campbell, Nate Eaton, and Nathan Hickey whom I have watched a bunch of times over the years play well for the Woo Sox and the Boston Red Sox. 20 year old phenom Franklin Arias did not disappoint. He smoked a ringing double and made two fantastic defensive plays in the field, along with a bunch of other routine plays at his 2nd base position. Eaton ended being the star of the game, cracking a 2-run home run in the top of the 10th inning to seal the win for the Woo Sox. As for the Tides/Tandangs, I like Enrique Bradfield, Jr. in the outfield, just waiting for him to get it altogether at the plate so he can become a consistent force for the Orioles. Overall, a pretty fun game with the Red Sox winning in 10 over the Tides by a score of 4-3.

One really fun thing that happened was I caught a baseball thrown into the stands from Tides 3rd baseman Jose Barrero, and then handed it to a young fan who was attending her first Tides game with her father. I have a zillion baseballs and told the young fan that if I caught a ball I would give it to her. Promises made, promises kept. After another stellar fireworks show post-game, Rachel and I hopped on the Tide and rode the rails back to our parking spot off Military Highway, and were home in short order. Overall, it was another awesome night at Harbor Park for Woo Sox vs. Tandangs in beautiful waterside Norfolk, VA, USA.
