📰 News we're reading

1. Virginia's first recorded leatherback nest shows up on a military base, and the eggs are fenced off (thecooldown.com) — Virginia Beach’s secure military shoreline near NAS Oceana Dam Neck Annex is now home to Virginia’s first recorded leatherback sea turtle nest, which officials have fenced off to protect the eggs. Biologists say the rare nesting event could signal shifting wildlife behavior and underscores how even defense-controlled beaches can quietly support endangered species and coastal ecosystem health.

2. Cardiovascular health spending has tripled, but death rates are rising in major Hampton Roads cities (wvtf.org) — Virginia Beach saw nearly 1,200 cardiovascular deaths in 2024, the highest total among major Hampton Roads cities, even as medical spending and treatment options have surged. A new study and local experts say heart disease deaths are plateauing despite tripled national spending, with Black residents facing higher death rates and barriers to healthy food, exercise, and regular care.

3. Independent film to showcase the beauty of Hampton Roads waterways (pilotonline.com) — A Virginia Beach native has wrapped filming on “72 Whaler,” an independent coming-of-age movie that prominently features Broad Bay, Lynnhaven Inlet, and other Hampton Roads waterways. Shot entirely in the region with a local crew, the ultra-low-budget film highlights the emotional healing power of the coastal landscape and could bring more attention to Virginia Beach’s scenic inlets when it hits festivals next spring.

4. Virginia Beach cannabis forum prepares entrepreneurs for state's new retail marijuana market (wtkr.com) — Virginia Beach entrepreneurs just got a head start on Virginia’s new retail cannabis market, with state regulators urging them to line up banking, landlords, and vendors well before stores open in July 2027. A local forum, organized by Armintia LLC and LockGreen, walked would-be dispensary owners through licensing timelines, location limits, and key rules residents and business owners should understand.
