Picture Connecticut: A New Civil War Marker
The latest stop on the Picture Connecticut tour is a train ride back in time.

VERNON, CT — The latest stop on the Picture Connecticut tour takes us to a new Civil War monument.
A Vernon scout last weekend has put the finishing touches on his Eagle project that takes a ride back into history. It's a granite stone monument that was dedicated at the Vernon Depot Historic Park to mark the spot where soldiers from the area boarded trains to fight for the Union Army during the Civil War.
It was the culmination of Josh Prignano's community project.

The men boarded trains in Vernon and were transported to Hartford and mustered into Company F of the 5th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment. According to the National Park Service, the 5th Connecticut was in action at places like Front Royal, Cedar Mountain, Bull Run, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.
The 5th was also present for the Surrender of Gen. Joseph Johnston and his army, according to the park service.

Members of Prignano's Troop 2020 volunteered to help and assistance was also given by the town of Vernon and private citizens. Research guidance for the project was rendered by local historian Matthew Reardon. The New England Civil War Museum and Research Center had endorsed the project, which it had envisioned for some time.
Prignano is both a Civil War and Revolutionary War re-enactor.
