VERNON, CT — We'll take our latest journey to a Hidden Gem via what is now part of the north central Connecticut Rails-to-Trails system.

There, on Church Street in Vernon and along a spur of the trail system, sits the Vernon Depot Historic Park.

It's a ride back in time to when trains ruled in Victorian America.

For 120 years, a railroad brought materials and passengers through the bustling mill districts in Vernon and Rockville.

The last freight train made a run through town in 1970 and the last regular passenger train well before that — in 1955. The rails were removed in the mid-1970s, but the roadbed remained and was turned into the trail system.

The Vernon Depot passenger station was located on the narrow strip of land that is bordered by Church Street, Phoenix Street, Birch Road and Washington Street. Part of it has been preserved at the park, as has a strip of tracks and other artifacts.
