Here are the top five stories today in Douglasville:
- A multi-agency effort has successfully dismantled an Atlanta-based drug trafficking organization, the Northern District of Georgia U.S. Attorney's Office reports. In addition to federal and state law enforcement officials, several local police departments — including the Douglasville Police Department — assisted in the investigation. Eight defendants pleaded guilty to drug trafficking conspiracy in connection with an organization led by Kevin Clark, who operated in and around his southwest Atlanta home. (Department of Justice)
- A former law enforcement officer who previously worked in Douglasville has been sentenced for the molestation of a 7-year-old girl. Matthew Atkins, a former Austell police sergeant who previously served with the Powder Springs and Douglasville Police Departments, will serve a 20-year sentence. Police say the incident occurred in March of 2021 when Atkins was off duty; the victim reported the crime to her grandmother. (WSB Atlanta)
- Residents of Bob White Lane in Douglasville are complaining about a foul odor that has been affecting their neighborhood for weeks. The home in question is owned by Connecticut-based Starwood Property Trust and is being managed by Excalibur Homes. According to Excalibur, the problem was caused by clogged septic tank lines due to "abuse or neglect," placing the onus on the tenant to pay for repairs. (WSB Atlanta)
- The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is inviting veterans to the 2nd Annual Veterans Community Outreach Day. Attendees can expect food, vendors, music, and representatives from a variety of veteran organizations. The outreach day will be held at the Douglas County Sheriff's Office from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jun. 10. (Douglas County Sheriff's Office (Georgia) via Facebook)
- Douglasville's upcoming 2nd Annual Music Festival and BBQ Cook-Off will feature a few new food options this year.
