Lucile Hilton Redding, 97, Former Douglas County Sheriff

She was Georgia's first female sheriff in 1963.

Former Douglas County sheriff Lucile Redding, the first woman sheriff in Georgia, passed away Sunday at the age of 97.

The sheriff’s office shared the news of Redding’s death on Facebook.

Redding served as sheriff from 1963-1965 after the death of her husband, former sheriff Otis “Monk” Redding.

Visitation is 5 p.m.-8 p.m. Tuesday at Jones-Wynn Funeral Home in Villa Rica. The funeral is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church of Villa Rica, with Dr. Kevin Williams and Dr. Billy Godwin officiating.

According to her obituary posted on Tributes.com, Lucile Hilton Redding became sheriff following the death of her husband in 1963. She was appointed to the position, then won a special election, becoming Georgia’s first female sheriff. Known as “Granny Red,” she also owned the Rock Inn Cafe, a family-owned restaurant in Winston from 1946-2006.

She was the mother of two, grandmother of six, great-grandmother of 10, and great-great-grandmother of two
