Raccoon Involved In Lithia Springs Dog Attack Positive For Rabies
Douglas County officials encouraged residents to ensure their pets are vaccinated against the disease.
LITHIA SPRINGS, GA — A raccoon Douglas County officials said was involved in an attack with two dogs Wednesday tested positive for rabies.
County officials said Friday the Douglas County Animal Control responded to the north county line area of Lithia Springs, where the attack happened, and captured the raccoon.
Test results returned Thursday, confirming the raccoon was positive for rabies, officials said.

Rabies, a virus transmitted through saliva when an infected animal bites another mammal, is largely spread by wild animals such as raccoons, skunks, bats and foxes, officials said. It is completely preventable by vaccination.
Workers with animal control are notifying residents of the positive case and are urging pet owners to get their pets vaccinated against the disease.

County officials offered the following additional tips:
- Keep your pet’s rabies vaccinations up to date.
- Keep your cats indoors and your dogs on a leash when outside.
- Don’t leave food or garbage outside that may attract wild animals.
- Stay away from wild animals and do not feed them.
