Angel Park Announces Opening Date, Ribbon Cutting

The storybook-themed park, which won an award this week for its thoughtful design, will open this month near Perry Hall Library.

PERRY HALL, MD — Angel Park is opening before the end of the month. The park on Honeygo Boulevard will officially open to the public on Monday, Oct. 31, park organizers announced this week. A ribbon cutting and dedication ceremony are scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 30.

The children's playground and community gathering place features castles, slides, a pirate ship and nontraditional elements like braille panels so that all children, including those with disabilities, can enjoy it.

Andy and Kelli Szczybor of Perry Hall, whose son Ryan died of leukemia when he was 15 months old, are the driving forces behind Angel Park. They wanted to create a space for all children and for those who have lost someone. The 16,000-square-foot park will be surrounded by pickets and pavers where donors can memorialize those they consider to be angels.

"Our Angel Park project has been a once-in-a-lifetime, one-of-a-kind experience! Everyone should be very proud of this accomplishment - we worked as a team and created a safe place for ALL to play!" organizers wrote. The Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities presented Kelly Szczybor and Michelle Strekfus with the 2016 Accessibility Award at a ceremony Wednesday on behalf of the volunteers who helped raise $1.5 million to build what was designed to be the largest and most accessible playground in the Baltimore region for children with special needs.
