Brookline Police Chief Gets 3-year Contract Extension

The Select Board agreed to the extension last week.

BROOKLINE, MA — The Select Board voted unanimously to give Police Chief Jennifer Paster a three-year contract extension during its most recent meeting.

Paster’s current contract was set to expire next month, but this renewal will keep her in her role for the foreseeable future.

Town Administrator Chas Carey spoke highly of Paster and expressed his strong endorsement of her new contract.

“Since becoming chief, she has ensured that the department has been staffed, that policies and procedures have been updated, that the finances have been updated, that the command staff is fully engaged,” Carey said. “I just want to say how grateful we are for the Chief’s work.”

Select Board Chair Bernard Greene said Paster has significantly improved the department since she first assumed the role on a permanent basis in 2023. Paster was thrust into the role on an interim basis in August 2022 when former chief Ashley Gonzalez was placed on leave due to accusations of sexual harassment from female employees.

“It is a position held by just one person, but I’ve never felt alone,” Paster said. “For me I have always felt truly supported.”

Paster’s new contract is similar to her previous one, but adds a new Hazardous Duty/Regional Tactical Response Stipend worth five percent of her weekly salary payments. By the contract’s third year, the number will increase to seven percent. It also increases her education incentive pay, which incentivizes officers to earn criminal justice degrees. It contains benefits such as insurance, vacation time, disability coverage, and retirement that are equal to that of all town department heads.

Paster has served a total of 26 years as a Brookline police officer.
