Maine Police Still Looking To Solve Murder Of Brookline Man 50 Years Later
The man was found dead in his car, which had been burnt.
BROOKLINE, MA — The Maine State Police is still looking to solve an unsolved homicide of a resident 50 years later.
James Cassidy, 42, was found dead inside his burned Chrysler station wagon in a woodland area near Route 9 in the town of Amherst, Maine on April 5, 1976. Investigators soon deemed the fire was set intentionally, ruling the car fire an arson and Cassidy’s death a homicide.
Cassidy was an executive at the Brookline Trust Company Bank at the time of his death. The Boston Bureau of the FBI had issued a warrant for Cassidy’s arrest on the same day of his death, charging him with embezzling $20,000 from his place of work.

An empty gasoline canister was found not far from the vehicle, however that evidence never led to any significant leads. Cassidy also owned a stamp-collecting business known as James A. Cassidy, Inc. in Chestnut Hill. Investigators considered the possibility that Cassidy may have been killed due to possessing valuable stamps.
No suspects have ever been named in the case. Shortly after the discovery of Cassidy's body, Maine State Police released composite sketches of two men believed to have rented a vehicle in the Bangor area between April 5 and April 8, 1976. Employees of the stamp business were also investigated.
