Malden City Councilor Announces State Senate Campaign
A local State Rep. is also running for the position.

MALDEN, MA — A City Councilor has announced his campaign for State Senate in the fifth Middlesex District.
Ryan O’Malley represents Ward 4 on the Malden City Council. He was first elected to the role in 2015 and is currently serving his sixth consecutive term. He was the youngest person to ever be elected to the council as well as the first openly gay member at the time of his election. His Senate campaign announcement comes on the heels of incumbent Jason Lewis announcing he will not be running for re-election.
O’Malley said inadequate state funding for public education was a driving force behind what drove him to run for the office.

“There have been various attempts to address the failings of Chapter 70, which funds education, including the Student Opportunities Act and the Fair Share Amendment (the “Millionaires Tax”). While wellmeaning, these changes have not resolved the underlying dysfunction of the basic foundation education formula,” O’Malley said in a statement. “I approach the issue of public education funding, not only as a local official, but also as a former Malden Public School student who received Title I early reading intervention. Adequate resources and dedicated elementary and secondary school teachers provided me with the tools to succeed.”
Another priority of O’Malley’s if elected is to ensure state legislator comply with the state’s Open Meeting and Public Records Laws. He noted how the law also applies to local government boards and even youth councils, and that state leaders should be held to the same standard.
